The City of Zurich is testing a new type of toilet technology at the ZüriWC site in parc Schindlergut: The Nutrient Harvester NH-25. Hidden in the service room of the solid stationary public toilet mostly visible as a large concrete block, at the heart of the system a new way of wastewater treatment and valorization is tested. The modular and compact Nutrient Harvester was specifically designed to largely reduce the volume (by 95%) and to convert urine into into safe, dry plant fertilizer — on-site, without a sewer connection and with a view towards a sustainable future. The entire process runs fully automatically. Stabilization substrate needs to be refilled and the fertilizer concentrate removed only once a month.
The technology was developed at the Swiss Institute for aquatic science and Technology Eawag and comercialized by its new spin-off ogmo. The pilot test is a collaboration of the Umwelt- und Gesundheistschutz Department with the Eawag spin-off ogmo.
