LA BISTOQUETTE

Where Urban Sanitation Meets the Sponge City Concept

Being populated in 2025, La Bistoquette in Genève will serve 330 population equivalents across 103 apartments and 2,400 m² of commercial space. Its integrated system separates urine, greywater, and brownwater for on-site treatment. Urine is stabilized, filtered to remove pharmaceuticals and pathogens, and processed into Aurin fertilizer (13 m³/year), sold outside the cooperative. Greywater passes through two vertical flow constructed wetlands and an aerated biochar filter, while brownwater is treated via vermifiltration, producing vermicompost for the cooperative garden. Treated water is reused for toilet flushing and irrigation; any surplus is analyzed and discharged into the neighborhood's rainwater network. The system - developed by aneco, Vuna Nexus, and partners - is a holistic approach of the sponge city concept.
