0infrastructure.%20The%20impacts%20will%20not%20remain%20confined%20to%20the%20mountain%20area%20but%20also%20affect%20the%20downstream%20lowlands%2C%20entailing%20a%5Cu00a0wide%20range%20of%20socioeconomical%20consequences.%20European%20mountains%20will%20have%20a%5Cu00a0completely%20different%20visual%20appearance%2C%20in%20which%20low-%20and%20mid-range-altitude%20glaciers%20will%20have%20disappeared%20and%20even%20large%20valley%20glaciers%20will%20have%20experienced%20significant%20retreat%20and%20mass%20loss.%20Due%20to%20increased%20air%20temperatures%20and%20related%20shifts%20from%20solid%20to%20liquid%20precipitation%2C%20seasonal%20snow%20lines%20will%20be%20found%20at%20much%20higher%20altitudes%2C%20and%20the%20snow%20season%20will%20be%20much%20shorter%20than%20today.%20These%20changes%20in%20snow%20and%20ice%20melt%20will%20cause%20a%5Cu00a0shift%20in%20the%20timing%20of%20discharge%20maxima%2C%20as%20well%20as%20a%5Cu00a0transition%20of%20runoff%20regimes%20from%20glacial%20to%20nival%20and%20from%20nival%20to%20pluvial.%20This%20will%20entail%20significant%20impacts%20on%20the%20seasonality%20of%20high-altitude%20water%20availability%2C%20with%20consequences%20for%20water%20storage%20and%20management%20in%20reservoirs%20for%20drinking%20water%2C%20irrigation%2C%20and%20hydropower%20production.%20Whereas%20an%20upward%20shift%20of%20the%20tree%20line%20and%20expansion%20of%20vegetation%20can%20be%20expected%20into%20current%20periglacial%20areas%2C%20the%20disappearance%20of%20permafrost%20at%20lower%20altitudes%20and%20its%20warming%20at%20higher%20elevations%20will%20likely%20result%20in%20mass%20movements%20and%20process%20chains%20beyond%20historical%20experience.%20Future%20cryospheric%20research%20has%20the%20responsibility%20not%20only%20to%20foster%20awareness%20of%20these%20expected%20changes%20and%20to%20develop%20targeted%20strategies%20to%20precisely%20quantify%20their%20magnitude%20and%20rate%20of%20occurrence%20but%20also%20to%20help%20in%20the%20development%20of%20approaches%20to%20adapt%20to%20these%20changes%20and%20to%20mitigate%20their%20consequences.%20Major%20joint%20efforts%20are%20required%20in%20the%20domain%20of%20cryospheric%20monitoring%2C%20which%20will%20require%20coordination%20in%20terms%20of%20data%20availability%20and%20quality.%20In%20particular%2C%20we%20recognize%20the%20quantification%20of%20high-altitude%20precipitation%20as%20a%5Cu00a0key%20source%20of%20uncertainty%20in%20projections%20of%20future%20changes.%20Improvements%20in%20numerical%20modeling%20and%20a%5Cu00a0better%20understanding%20of%20process%20chains%20affecting%20high-altitude%20mass%20movements%20are%20the%20two%20further%20fields%20that%5Cu00a0%5Cu2013%20in%20our%20view%5Cu00a0%5Cu2013%20future%20cryospheric%20research%20should%20focus%20on.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222018-03-01%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22en%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.5194%5C%2Ftc-12-759-2018%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%221994-0424%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Ftc.copernicus.org%5C%2Farticles%5C%2F12%5C%2F759%5C%2F2018%5C%2F%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%222KUVZ4VJ%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222023-04-24T11%3A51%3A51Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D

22lastName%22%3A%22Tietjen%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Corinna%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Schr%5Cu00f6der%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Ariane%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Krause%22%7D%5D%2C%22abstractNote%22%3A%22Recycling%20nutrients%20is%20essential%20for%20closing%20nutrient%20loops%20within%20a%20circular%20economy.%20Using%20locally%20available%20resources%20such%20as%20human%20excreta%20to%20produce%20bio-based%20recycling%20fertilizers%20can%20substitute%20mineral%20fertilizers%20and%20thereby%20promote%20environmentally%20friendly%20food%20production.%20To%20better%20understand%20the%20fertilizer%20potential%20and%20nitrogen%20value%20of%20human%20excreta%2C%20three%20novel%20and%20safe%20recycling%20products%20were%20evaluated%20in%20a%20field%20experiment.%20Two%20nitrified%20urine%20fertilizers%20%28NUFs%29%20and%20one%20fecal%20compost%20were%20applied%20alone%20or%20in%20combination%2C%20and%20compared%20against%20the%20commercial%20organic%20fertilizer%20vinasse.%20In%20addition%2C%20the%20uptake%20of%20pharmaceuticals%20was%20assessed%20for%20treatments%20with%20compost%20application.%20White%20cabbage%20%28%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Brassica%20oleracea%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20var%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20.%20capitata%20f.%20alba%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%29%20was%20cultivated%20in%20plots%20in%20three%20different%20soil%20types%20%28sand%2C%20loam%20or%20silt%29%20treated%20with%20the%20fertilizers%20according%20to%20plant%20needs%20and%20mineral%20soil%20nitrogen%20content.%20The%20two%20NUFs%20resulted%20in%20marketable%20yields%20similar%20to%20those%20of%20vinasse%20in%20all%20soil%20types.%20Combining%20fecal%20compost%20with%20a%20NUF%20led%20to%20increased%20marketable%20yield%20compared%20to%20compost%20alone.%20The%20highest%20yield%20was%20recorded%20from%20the%20sandy%20soil%2C%20where%20vinasse%20and%20NUF%20treatments%20led%20to%20comparable%20yields%2C%20as%20expected%20in%20organic%20productions%20systems%20%28up%20to%2072%5Cu00a0t%5Cu00a0ha%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cu22121%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%29.%20The%20cabbage%20yield%20and%20total%20aboveground%20fresh%20biomass%20followed%20the%20following%20trend%20in%20all%20soils%3A%20NUFs%20%5Cu223c%20vinasse%20%5Cu2265%20compost%20%2B%20NUF%20%5Cu2265%20compost.%20Nitrogen%20uptake%20in%20the%20cabbage%20heads%20and%20total%20biomass%20was%20significantly%20higher%20in%20sand%20%2869.5%5Cu2013144%5Cu00a0kg%5Cu00a0ha%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cu22121%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%29%20than%20loam%20%2871.4%5Cu201395.8%5Cu00a0kg%5Cu00a0ha%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cu22121%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%29.%20All%20compost%20treatments%20alleviated%20the%20effect%20of%20soil%20type%20and%20resulted%20in%20comparable%20nitrogen%20uptake%20and%20yield%20in%20all%20soil%20types.%20Plant%20uptake%20of%20pharmaceuticals%20%28Carbamazepin%29%20was%20higher%20in%20sand%20than%20in%20loam%2C%20and%20concentration%20in%20the%20edible%20part%20was%20lower%20than%20in%20the%20outer%20leaves.%20In%20conclusion%2C%20NUF%20alone%20appears%20to%20be%20a%20promising%20successful%20fertilizer%20substitute%20in%20horticultural%20food%20production.%20The%20combined%20application%20of%20NUF%20and%20compost%20led%20to%20slightly%20lower%20crop%20yields%2C%20but%20may%20increase%20soil%20carbon%20content%20in%20the%20long%20term%2C%20promoting%20climate-friendly%20food%20production.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222023-1-16%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.3389%5C%2Ffenvs.2022.1038175%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%222296-665X%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Fwww.frontiersin.org%5C%2Farticles%5C%2F10.3389%5C%2Ffenvs.2022.1038175%5C%2Ffull%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22FF5G8JEK%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222023-04-24T13%3A19%3A43Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
