Chamanna Cluozza: Wastewater Treatment in the Heart of the Alps

Case Study: Chamanna Cluozza

CHAMANNA CLUOZZA
Wastewater Treatment in the Heart of the Alps

Located at an altitude of 1,889 m above sea level in the Swiss National Park, Chamanna Cluozza treats its wastewater entirely on-site using three earth worm filters and two constructed wetlands. Designed for 40 population equivalents, it serves up to 58 guests and 6 staff during the four-month summer season, producing around 400 m³ of wastewater annually. Solids are degraded by worms to produce small amounts of vermicompost for reuse after maturation, while liquids are cleaned and infiltrated locally. Developed with Vuna LLC, this robust, seasonal system functioning without energy, shows how even remote alpine huts treat their wastewater in an environmentally safe way.
